Also, the newspaper gig actually sucked. And you went on to get degrees and do jobs that were more fulfilling.

None of the people I know who did that beat writing grind moved up. I know of very few people who navigated the ladder that way.

Instead, people write elsewhere then move into articles. So the newspaper was likely dead end.
